What is IAF?

The Indian Air Force was formed on the 8th October 1932 as an auxiliary air force of the Royal Air Force. The IAF played a very significant role during World War II. Their motto is - "The Indian Air Force aims to overwhelm the adversaries with application of aerospace power in defence of the nation." Amongst the air forces of the world its complement of personnel and aircraft assets ranks 4th.

What are the achievements of the Indian Air Force?

Since the formation of the IAF it has lived up to its motto and made the country feel proud and safe with their achievements over the years. Some of their many contributions to the motherland were made during the following events:

i. War of Burma

ii. Partition of India and Pakistan

iii. Conflict with China 1962

iv. The war of December 1971

What are the different job posts available at the IAF?

Depending upon one’s education qualification and eligibility criteria one can get into either one of the following branches:

i)Flying Branch

ii)Technical Branch

iii)Ground Duty Branch

Can students with Commerce Stream(10+2) join the airforce?

Yes, there is no doubt that Commerce students cannot join the IAF.

Candidates with an educational background in commerce discipline can join branches of Administrative, Logistics, Education and Accounts.

Can I join the air force after completion of my 12th?

Yes, you can try for the air force after completion of your 12th. Candidates (only male) have the opportunity to join the 'Flying Branch' of the IAF through NDA exam. As for graduates, they can join in through entrance exams like CDS Examination and AFCAT.

What post can I get in the IAF if i'm a graduate in Aeronautical engineering?

Aeronautical Engineer in Electronics:

The individual will be responsible for the communications and signals required on the Air Force Station. In addition to that, the person will be in charge of the execution of preventive maintenance and servicing of aircraft.

Aeronautical Engineer in Mechanical:

The individual ill be involved with preventive maintenance and servicing of aircraft or of common user and specialist application vehicles,safety and maintenance of firearms and ammunition at an Air Force Base.

What are the basic criteria for joining the airforce?

Common eligibility criteria for all branches are:

i)Gender - Both male and females can get enlisted.

ii)Nationality - Indian

iii)Marital status - Unmarried/Single

iv)The candidate should meet up to the physical standards specified by the Board.

What are the physical standards for IAF?

i) One must be in good physical and mental health.

ii) The applicants chest should be well developed.

iii) There should be no illness related to bones or joints.

iv) There are definitive standards for men and women with different height and weight.

v) There should not be any past history of illness related to eyes, ear, throat or nose.

vi) Any sign of functional or organic disease of the heart and blood vessels should not be present.

vii) A urine test will be taken and any abnormality in the result will lead to rejection.

viii) No skin related disease should be present.

What are the eligibility criteria for joining the IAF after 12th ?

One must take an entry level examination conducted by the UPSC to join the National Defence Academy(NDA). Apart from this one may also go through a Pilot Aptitude Battery Test, Medical Test, IQ test, etc. The entry to NDA is merely based on merit.

Basic requirements to get into NDA are :

Age Limit- 16 to 19 years

Should be of the Indian Nationality.

iii. Gender - only males applicable (unmarried)

One should have completed their 10+2 with PCM.

Can I apply for the NDA before completing my higher secondary education?

Yes, you most definitely can if you fulfill the requirements needed to join the NDA.

What is the eligibility criteria for Graduates to join the IAF?

Graduates can join either of three branches of the air force - Flying, Technical or the Ground Duty Branch. The common basic eligibility criteria for all three branches are as follows:

Gender - Applicable to both Males and Females

Nationality - Indian

iii. The candidate should be unmarried.

The age criteria and education qualification differs with every branch.

What are the requirements for joining the Flying Branch of the IAF?

i) Male between the ages of 16-19 years can join the Flying Branch of IAF whilst pursuing their 10+2 in Science stream or after completion of it , only if they fulfil the eligibility criteria and successfully clear the National Defence Academy Entrance exam.

ii) Males lying in the age group of 19-23 years can enlist by either giving the Combined Defence Service Examination(CDSE) or through National Cadet Corps.

iii) Females (19-23 years) can join the 'Flying Branch' through the Short Service Commission.

iv) Candidates could even apply for the IAF through the AFCAT Exam.

v) Indian Nationality.

vi) The candidate should be unmarried.

vii) Educational qualification - Graduate in any field with Mathematics and Physics in 10+2.

Can females join the Indian Air Force?

Yes, females do get to have a job in the IAF. Females can join either branches of the IAF i.e., Flying Branch(19-23 y/o), Technical Branch(18-28 y/o) or the Ground Duty Branch(20-23 y/o).

What is the educational qualification required to enlist in the 'Technical Branch' of the Indian Air Force?

One can join as an officer at the 'Technical Branch' of the IAF by majoring in Aeronautical Engineering streams(Electronics and Mechanical).

What is the educational requirement for Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) Examination in the IAF?

a) B. Tech. in Radio Physics and Electronics from Calcutta University.

b)B.Sc. Physics with Electronics from Bombay University OR B.Sc. with Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.

c) AMIE or equivalent qualification

d) Minimum of two years practical experience in the field of Electronics in a

recognised servicing or manufacturing organisation.

What is the educational requirement for Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical)Examination in the IAF?

a) B.Sc. with Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.

What is the entrance exam for joining the IAF?

The basic examination for joining the IAF is the National Defence Academy Examination conducted by the UPSC. This particular exam is

conducted twice every year, preferably in the month of April and September

Is there any entrance exam for joining the Flying Branch of the IAF?

Yes, for joining the Flying Branch one must give the NDA Exam in addition to satisfying their eligibility requirements or through the AFCAT exam.

What is the entrance exam for joining the Technical Branch of the IAF?

In order to get enlisted in the Technical Branch of the IAF the candidate must give the Combined Defence Service Examination (CDSE) conducted by the UPSC or Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT).

What is the syllabus for NDA?

The NDA Entrance Examination conducts two written examinations of Mathematics and GAT.

i) Paper I- Mathematics (Maximum 300 marks)

It consists of topics related to Algebra, Matrices and Determinants, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry of two and three dimensions, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus and Differential Equations, Vector Algebra, Statistics and Probability

ii) Paper II- GAT (Maximum 600 marks) This part of examination is further divided into two parts:

a) PART A - English (Maximum 200 marks). This is to test the candidate's English proficiency and vocabulary.

b) PART B - General Ability Test .

Section A - Physics. ( approx. 25% weightage)

Section B - Chemistry. (approx. 15% weightage)

Section C - General Science. (approx. 10% weightage)

Section D - History. (approx. 20% weightage)

Section E - Geography. (approx. 20% weightage)

Section F - Current Events. (approx. 10% weightage)

* the weightage carried by each section of PART B is the percentage of marks held by that particular section to the total maximum marks assigned to PART B.

What is the syllabus for the Combined Defence Service Examination?

The CDSE consists of a written examination followed by an interview round for IQ and personality test.

i) The syllabus for written exam comprises topics related to subjects of English, General Knowledge and Mathematics each of 300 marks.

a) Code No.1 - English

b) Code No.2 - General Knowledge (History,Geography and Current Events.)

c)Code No.3 - Mathematics (Arithmetic, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Mensuration and Statistics.)

ii) The Interview round has two stages(200 marks in total):

Stage 1 - Officer Intelligence Rating test(OIR) and Picture Perception & Description test(PP & DT)

Stage 2 - Interview, Group Testing Officer Task, Psychology test and Conference.

What is the exam pattern for AFCAT by IAF?

It consists of examinations - AFCAT and EKT.

i) AFCAT ( 300 marks)

It includes subjects of :

  • General Awareness
  • Verbal Ability(English)
  • Numerical Ability
  • Reasoning
  • Military aptitude test

ii) Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT)

It includes subjects of :

  • Mechanical
  • Electrical
  • Computer Science
  • Electronics

What are the selection criteria for the IAF NDA exam of the IAF?

The selection is merit based. The cut-off for the written test varies between 340-360 marks whereas the total cut-off could go till 700-720 as of year 2019.

The selection is merit based. The cut-off for the written test varies between 340-360 marks whereas the total cut-off could go till 700-720 as of year 2019. The candidate should at least score 20% in each subject.

What is the selection criteria for AFCAT conducted by the IAF?

The selection is merit based. The cut-off for the test is the minimum marks required to pass the examination. As of 2018, the minimum marks for AFCAT 1 is 155 for online test and 60 for EKT whereas for AFCAT 2 is 140 for online test and 55 for EKT.

What is the fee for the IAF NDA exam of IAF?

The initial fee for the National Defence Academy Examination is Rs.100/- (as of 2020).

What is the fee of the CDSE exam of IAF?

The fee for CDS exam is Rs.200/-
